Ballard Friend Obituary

Ballard Lowe Friend, 91, died Sunday, January 14, 2024, at home in Dalton, Georgia, of natural causes.

Born March 23, 1932, in Pikeville, Kentucky, he was the youngest of seven children born to James Pembroke and Clarissa Mae (Mullins) Friend. Mr. Friend graduated from Pikeville High School in 1950 and attended Pikeville College for 2 years before working a variety of jobs, including surveying and school teaching. He married Gladys Vivian Maynard in Clintwood, Virginia, on July 5, 1956.

Mr. Friend was drafted into the U.S. Army in April 1956, and upon his return in February 1958 from serving in Germany, he worked in earnest to provide for his growing family. In 1961, he became a letter carrier in Orlando, Florida, then successfully applied to become a postal inspector, and was transferred in November 1971 to Atlanta, Georgia. After retiring from the U.S. Postal Service with more than 30 years of service, he and Vivian fulfilled a long-held desire by working a few summers at Grand Teton National Park. He and Vivian resided at times in Colorado Springs, Colorado; Jacksonville, Florida; Orlando, Florida; Duluth, Georgia; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Maysville, Georgia. During his well-earned retirement years, Mr. Friend enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and the Caribbean, always with a pack of Rook cards handy.

Mr. Friend worshipped at Orlando Baptist Temple, Orlando, Florida; Duluth Baptist Church, Duluth, Georgia; Duluth First Methodist Church, Duluth, Georgia; and Crown View Baptist Church, Dalton, Georgia.

He is survived by his children, Michael Friend (Stacy), David Friend (Connie), and Evelyn Epperson (Bill); his grandchildren, Ryan Friend (Vanessa), John Friend (Leslie), Josh Epperson, Emme Friend, Vivie Friend, and Kate Friend; great-grandson, Leonardo Friend; and many treasured nieces and nephews.

All of us who survive him are grateful for his generosity and his determination to make a better life for us. May his memory be a blessing to all.
