Loris, South Carolina – Bunia Gaye Short, age 78, passed away on September 29, 2021, at the Oaks of Loris. Born on October 16, 1942, in Ransom, KY, she was the daughter of the late Stewart Smith and Edna Alley Hatfield Smith. Gaye grew up on Blackberry Creek and was a graduate of Belfry High School. After getting married, the couple moved to Michigan to make their home. She loved spending time with her family, often going “up north” with her siblings and their families. She held several jobs throughout her life, including working for her brothers’ business, her husband and nephew’s business and then General Motors until her retirement, when they relocated to South Carolina and made that their home.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert Short and two daughters, Melissa Short and Robin Short. Also preceded in death by five brothers, James E., Edwin, Bill, Moses, and Harvey Smith and two sisters, Sylvia Keesee and Elvia Smith.
Those left to cherish her memory include two grandchildren, Katelynn Clark (Almond) and Matt Jones of Myrtle Beach, SC and Kyle Loder of Roseville, MI. Four great-grandchildren, Grayson Cooper Almond (6), Kendall Lane Almond (5) Maisey Renee Jones (2) and Liam Matthew Jones (1). One brother, Sherman Bruce and wife Jeanne Smith of Ransom, KY, two sisters-in-law, Christine Smith and Ernestine Smith, both of Ransom, KY. Brother-in-law’s, Donald Short and Timothy Short, both of Lake George MI, Harry and wife Kathy Short of Nashville TN, and a host of nieces and nephews. A very special brother-in-law and his wife, Steve and wife Tongling Short of Elgin, SC. Both were selflessly dedicated to Gaye’s care while at the Oaks of Loris Assisted Living. They were in constant communication with the facility about her needs and on visits would bring her items that she needed and enjoyed. The Smith family is very thankful for all that they did and the love they shared.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 2pm, at Victory in Jesus church in Sidney, KY, Pastor Mike Smith officiating. A graveside service will be held immediately after at the Alley Cemetery, Ransom KY.
