George D. DeFoe

George D. DeFoe, 86, of Williamson, WV, passed away Sunday, June 21, 2026 at Pikeville Medical Center.  Born November 5, 1939 to John and Victoria (Snow) DeFoe, George was raised in Chattaroy, WV. 

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his son, George D. DeFoe II (Kimberly May), his daughter, Kimberly Hackney (Rodney Hackney), his siblings, Sylvia Maynard (Roy Maynard), Linda Henchman (Dennis Henchman), and Homer DeFoe (Barbara DeFoe). 

He graduated from Chattaroy High School in 1957.  George worked for Norfolk and Southern Railroad for nearly 40 years before retiring in December 2000.

George was a lovable curmudgeon who loved to start his day with Honey Bun and coffee.  He liked his crossword puzzles and reading, and enjoyed sitting in his recliner watching NASCAR races.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Judy (Finley) DeFoe, and his daughter, Gretta Anderson-DeFoe (James Anderson).  He is also survived by his grandchildren:  Richard DeFoe, Robert Anderson, Stephen Davidson, Michael Hackney, Rodney Hackney, and Dakota Seith Hackney.  George loved his many nieces and nephews and thought of them as his own. 

Judy and Gretta would like to especially thank Kerri Young and her husband Jason Young for their help and support in these last few weeks of George’s life. 

Funeral services will be held Thursday; June 25, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel with Rev. Krista Cather, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Williamson, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, WV with Carl Whisenant, Chris Whisenant, Richard DeFoe, Allen Baldwin, Dustin Bianco, and Ross Yahr serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 6-9 pm Wednesday evening at the funeral home. 

In place of flowers, the family has requested donations to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
