Mary Bertha James, 96, of Rawl, WV went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 7, 2025. Born May 5, 1928 in Pike County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Orbie Thomas and Carrie Wood Hardin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ben Blevins, her second husband, Zephinor James, brothers, Jimmie Walter Hardin, Harold Ray Hardin, Russell Orbie Hardin, Joe Dick Hardin, Cecil Clyde Hardin, Homer Carl Hardin Sr., and John William “Bill” Hardin, and a sister, Allene Evelyn Smith.
Bertha had worked in retail and did factory work in Columbus, OH for many years. She was an excellent seamstress, cook, and all-around hard working, wonderful woman. Bertha will be remembered as a loving, caring, unselfish individual who helped many in her lifetime. She was an excellent storyteller, and was always full of wit and humor. One highlight of Bertha’s life was traveling with her two sisters to the city of New York on a bus tour where they were the life of the party. Bertha was a dedicated Christian who had a deep faith in God and was a member of the Chattaroy Church of God. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years and loved teaching the children. She will be missed by her many family members, friends, and neighbors.
She is survived by her sister, Alberta Grace of Vinton, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be held Monday, February 10, 2025 at 11:00 am at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, KY with Pastor Mike Bostic officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Memory Gardens at Maher, WV with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Sunday evening at the funeral home.
