Maybell (Grimmett) Lester

Maybell Lester, 82, of Varney, WV passed away Thursday; May 21, 2026 at the Pikeville Medical Center.  Born April 18, 1944 at Meador, WV, she was the daughter of the late Bill and Ida Hinkle Grimmett. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl Hatfield, her second husband, Russell Lester, a daughter, Jeannie Gail Hatfield, a stepson, Pedro Lester, two grandsons, William Ray Hatfield and Eli Franklin Hatfield, a great-grandchild, Ayden Chase Carroll, brothers, Eb, Frank, and Harvey Grimmett, and sisters, Lois Prater, Barbara Hammond, Peggy Hinkle, and Nellie Jean Mahon. 

Maybell was a homemaker and a longtime member of the Newtown Free Pentecostal Church. 

Survivors include her children, John (Eloise) Hatfield of Mate Creek, WV, Earl “Skipper” Hatfield Jr. of Newtown, WV, Jonathan Hatfield Lester of Varney, WV, Marsha Carol Hatfield of Chapmanville, WV, and Mattie Carmen Hammond of Gilbert, WV, stepdaughter, Melissa (Lester) Blair of Taylorville, WV, a sister, Sally Hoffsetter of Lansing, MI, her grandchildren, Angela Marie Hatfield, Kenny Hatfield, Megan Hammond, Jasmine Booth, Whitney Carroll, T.J. Smith, and Lee Ann Smith, 28 great-grandchildren, a special person, Russell Ray Prince, and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday; May 26, 2026 at 1:00 pm at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, KY with Russell Ray Prince officiating.  Burial will follow in the Ellison Hatfield Cemetery at Newtown, WV with family and friends serving as pallbearers. 

Visitation will be from 6-9 pm Monday evening at the funeral home.
