It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of William Kenneth “Bear” Rutherford, 80, of Huddy, KY on Saturday, July 27, 2024. Born January 5, 1944 in Pike County, KY, he was the son of the late Irvin Rutherford and Mildred Daniels Asbury. Kenneth was raised by his late grandparents, Landon and Dona Rutherford.
Kenneth dedicated many years of his life as a coal truck driver for Loftis Coal Company. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith.
Kenneth is survived by his devoted wife of 60 years, Shirley Rutherford, who stood by his side through all of life’s challenges. He is also survived by his children, Cynthia (Ronald) Blackburn, Lovella Simpkins, and Creeda (Bill) Hyden, who affectionately called him dad, his four cherished grandchildren, Tyler (Jessica) Blackburn, Makayla Simpkins, Garrett Smith, and Morgan Hyden, along with great-grandchild Brycen Blackburn, who lovingly knew him as “Popaw Bear”.
In addition to his immediate family, Kenneth is also survived by his sisters and brother, Evelyn Varney, John Irvin, Dale Ann, Linda, and Jean, sisters-in-law, Doris Thacker, Pat Phillips Hall, and Judy Hall, brother-in-law, Michael Thornsbury, and several nieces and nephews whom he held dear. He also leaves behind a special friend and cousin, Timmy Rutherford.
Kenneth’s love for his family and friends knew no bounds, and his memory will live on through the lives he touched. Those who had the privilege of knowing him will remember Kenneth as a cheerful and sociable individual who brought joy into their lives.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Hatfield Funeral Chapel at Toler, KY with Elders Robbie Worrix, Jeff Dotson, and Michael Elswick officiating. Burial will follow in the Rutherford Cemetery at Huddy, KY. Active pallbearers will be his sons-in-law Bill Hyden and Ronald Blackburn, his grandsons, Tyler Blackburn and Garrett Smith, as well as his dear friends, Michael Keith Rutherford and Keegan Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be Timmy Rutherford and Walter Lee.
Visitation will be from 6-9 pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home with special singing at 7:00 pm.
